Hyperrealitites - Meme Newspaper #4

Britain will keep 19,000 EU rules and regulations after Brexit.
Theresa May has started the process of leaving Europe by triggering Article 50.
Even though Britain are in the process of leaving the EU, they will still keep 19,000 EU rules and regulations because as a nation, there isn't enough time or expertise to start their own agencies from scratch before they exit in 2019.
Which makes you think, was it worth it? even though, if Britain won't change that much rules and regulations, what difference did it make?

For this one, I thought of the Will Ferrell meme because I thought, leaving Europe there would be changes but if UK are keeping 19,000 EU rules then nothing has changed, which is why I went with the 'in other news, the sky is blue' caption because everything seems the same.

The drawing idea came from this exhibition called The Herald Sun, where people would draw dicks in newspapers and that gave me an idea to draw stuff on the news to make it more fun and interesting to look at. Below is what I mean.

Hyperrealitites - Meme Newspaper #3

A SMART pound coin was launched recently to replace the old pound coin. The price and value of it has changed, what you could have for with the original £1 coin, introduced in 1983, would now cost you £3.10.
The current one 'round' pound is being replaced by a 12 sided coin, simply because, the current design became too easy to counterfeit, apparently, one in every 30 £1 coins have been fake.
The new coin will affect vending machines and parking meters as some will not accept the new coin design.
The two £1 coins will exist at the same time until the old one will be ceased on October 15. People are urged to return the old pound coins before October.

I chose this story because I feel like it was important for people to know what is going to happen soon with the whole one pound coin story.

The new coin makes it the most secure coin in the world, since it's so difficult to counterfeit, I thought of the Barney from 'How I Met Your Mother', for those who don't watch it, he says 'Challenge Accepted' when something seems impossible to achieve and everyone doesn't think he can do it, he finds a way, in the same way that this new pound is the most secure coin in the world and difficult to counterfeit.

I chose 'Barney' because even though there are people who have not seen the show, he is still well known around the world and his catchphrases are well known as well.

I made it look like a graffiti with 'Barney' being a stencil, to give it that bad ass look, which I feel like represents this poster as well, because he wants to do something that can't and shouldn't be done, a rebel you could say and graffiti is seen as a rebellious type thing.

I decided to look at some stencil posters to get an idea of how to display my figure...

The face has minimal features in my poster but I feel like there's enough for the viewers to know who it is.

I do have to admit that the black writing at the top is hard to read, especially the word 'coin' but I am sure that the viewer is smart enough to figure out what it says.

Hyperrealitites - Meme Newspaper #2

This story was in the Daily Mail. It's a story about too many young people are getting sexually transmitted infections, due to a lack of education about sex and relationships in schools. According to the figures, there were about 78,000 STI diagnoses among 15 to 19 years old in England in 2015 and roughly about 141,000 people between 20-24 years old.The sex education could become mandatory but, parents can retain the rights to withdraw their child from classes.

I picked this story because it's something that I see a lot in my generation, too many people are getting pregnant or get sexually transmitted diseases because they weren't too careful, maybe due to a lack of sex education.

Below is my response to this story. I picked the 'Bad Luck Brian' meme because I thought of the phrase, 'Takes one sex education class... Gets pregnant.' which made me think of 'Bad Luck Brian', to add that touch of further humour, I turned the meme into a sperm swimming towards the egg, which is represented by the white circle in the corner of the poster. I feel like everything goes well together so it's obvious of what it is supposed to represent, I feel like the viewer won't have a problem understanding it. The text is spread out to give it that pause in the middle and that build up which is always conveyed in the 'Bad Luck Brian' memes so I decided to replicate that.

Hyperrealitites - Meme Newspaper #1

This is an article about doctors saying that diesel cars should be taken off the road because it's a risk to our health.

The part that caught my eye was when Britain was under Tony Blair's Labour government persuaded people to buy diesel cars because they said it was 'green', they said that diesel cars were greener than than petrol vehicles.

I have used that quote and section from that article into my design. I used the laughing guy meme as a way of the meme laughing at the statement made by Labour years ago, which I also included the last part about Labour being colour blind because they must be if they said that diesel cars were 'green'.

I was in the mood for something colourful which is why I looked at colourful portraits. Since the meme was laughing, it did make me think of colours  and emotions, e.g. warm colours like yellow and orange could represent happiness.

I wanted the laughing guy meme to be the main focal point, as a way to represent how much of laughing statement  it was, which is why I used the empty spaces to fit the words in and around the guy.

Hyperrealitites Experiment #2 Further Development

After looking at different posters, I began liking the idea of combining two colours together and make it look like it's been screen printed. Below are some examples of what I mean.

I re-created Eddie Murphy on Illustrator and I started looking at how to display the design and what colours to use. I decided to go with Yellow and Purple, contrasting colours to create that cool colour of the two colours fighting with each other, with one colour coming through the other.

Below is what I came up with. As you can see, I combined the two designs together and changed the opacity of the yellow design so the purple one can be seen. I like how it looks because it looks like it's coming off the page, but, I'm still unsure about the layout and the whole composition of it, it's a bit plain and boring, I want something to compliment the look of the design I created which is cool and groovy.

Hyperrealities: The Next Step

After experimenting with various ideas that I came up with, I felt like I was steered more towards the meme newspaper idea because first of all, being a Millennial myself, I felt like it is important for our generation to be more involved with the news and what is going on in the world, second of all, I liked the idea of creating different memes because I feel like I wouldn't be restricted to what I make, I can be as creative as possible which is how I want to work. My idea is to make the meme visually appealing to attract the viewer's attention, and since my viewers are Millennials, it has to be something modern and cool.

The next step would be experimenting with this idea further by creating more memes from stories that I find from the newspaper and on the web. I will start by further developing the Eddie Murphy meme and see what I come up with.

With this idea, obviously, I want to go further that just creating a newspaper, I am thinking of possibly creating an app or a website to go with it, since everything is online or on the phone, I feel like I need to use that to my advantage, to get the viewer's attention.
