Seminar #10 - Methodology and Case Studies

Seminar - 27/01/2017

In this seminar, we were given questions and had to evaluate an article that related to our current project, Hyper realities. The link to it can be seen below..

 http://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1162/105474605774785307

1) What is the topic of the article?

The article looks at the illusion of mediation and the presence. It looks at how an illusion of mediation experience can be seen and feel real like virtual world and also, it looks at the inverse presence, which is the opposite of presence, it's when something is real but doesn't feel real and we don't want it to be real.

2) What keywords would you use for this article?

The keywords weren't stated in the article but I thought words like illusion, presence, inverse presence, mediation, hyper reality and real could be used as keywords.

3) What is the structure of the article?

I feel like the article is very structured. It follows a pattern, for example, the abstract comes first then the introduction then the literature review etc. It's very easily explained and the abstract tells the viewer what they are going to read, what they will talk about, how they found the info and how they will use it. The introduction follows the same process as the abstract, it tells the reader what the article will discuss and what the reader will expect.

4) In which section/s do the authors explain the background of the topic?

The authors explain the topic in the main body which is the literature review. It outlines the topic and tells the back story of the topic. This is where the definitions and explanation of what you are talking about should be included and provide evidence as well.

5) What are the authors trying to find out/answer?

There is no research question in this article but we can imagine the question. After reading the main body, the authors are trying to find the characteristics of the inverse presence, how it affects us and our emotions which they can then compare and conclude.

Methodology = Approach

The next part, we looked at how I can attempt to answer my research question by looking at the different options and which one I use will depend on my literature review. The two highlighted below are the main ones I should use to attempt to solve my research question.

- Case Studies
- Historical Research
- Interviews
- Visualization
- Reflective Journal
- Oral History

Hyperreality - Keiichi Matsuda

Keiichi Matsuda, who is an independent design consultant, has created a concept film called Hyper-Reality. The film features a women whose vision is filled with text, games, advertisements and internet services that pops up at times and we get to see what she can see. It’s the idea of that we use technology so much that it will merge us humans together with the technology, we would be able to escape the real world into a virtual world where things will become easier for us and we can do so many things at once like gaming and communicating without interrupting our daily chores.

It looks at how our virtual interaction interfaces with the environment and how our identity can be controlled and expressed digitally.

“It presents a provocative and kaleidoscopic new vision of the future, where physical and virtual realities have merged, and the city is saturated in media.” - Keiichi Matsuda.

About Hyper-Reality

Our physical and virtual realities are becoming increasingly intertwined. Technologies such as VR, augmented reality, wearables, and the internet of things are pointing to a world where technology will envelop every aspect of our lives. It will be the glue between every interaction and experience, offering amazing possibilities, while also controlling the way we understand the world.

Self Publishing - Stencil

Nick - 25/01/2017 - Process and Production

In this session, we looked at stencil printing. We were given a subject which we had to create a stencil out of then some words to go over it, lyrics of The Stone Roses ' Bye Bye Badman'.

I was given the word 'sheep' for my subject. I started off creating thumbnail sketches of the different ways I can create a stencil and what parts to cut out, as shown below...

I chose a design and I had to re-draw it to a bigger scale. I had to think about how it would look like on the page like composition and layout of it. I wanted it to be as big as possible so it fills up the whole page. I created a stencil out of the chosen design using a craft knife. I chose one that looked most like a sheep when printed and one that would fill up the page.

The next step was to print the stencil. I used paint and a roller to go over the stencil onto another piece of paper. I chose yellow for the first one because the idea was to make the stencil lighter than the type so the writing would stand out more. First thoughts was I didn't like how the yellow looked because I felt like it's took light and it blends in with the white background so you can't really see the sheep stencil. I did another one but in red, the thought was the opposite of the first one, I wanted to see what would it look like to have the background darker than the writing.

The next step was to add the text, I was given the words 'Drown me in your sweet submission.', I decided to go with the bold, block letters, less details as possible to go with the sheep stencil look. With the yellow sheep stencil, I went with blue writing so it stands out but I felt like I placed the writing too far apart so it doesn't look nice and everything else seems scattered around the page, which I don't like.

The second one, I decided to place the writing closer to each other which I think helped how it looked but the only thing I don't like is the fact that it's yellow, you can't really see the writing, especially compared to a darker stencil background.

If I had to do it again, I would create a light background other than yellow with a darker writing on top but placed close together like I did with the second poster.

Overall, I enjoyed this session because I like doing psychical designs like printing and drawing so I felt comfortable doing it. Just wish the outcome of my designs looked better.

Cinema 4D #1

Jay Payne - Process and Production - 18/01/2017

This session was just an introduction to Cinema 4D. We looked at how we can create something in Illustrator and make it 3D by merging the two softwares together.

To begin with, we looked at some websites and pieces of work that people have designed using Cinema 4D. Channel 4 was a good example of it.

Nowadays, more agencies are using Cinema 4D because it's very interesting what you can do with this software and it's quicker and easier than using a camera to record something, you can simply create it in Cinema 4D.

What I had to do first was to create a logo in Illustrator which I can upload on Cinema 4D. This is what I have created using the shape tool and the pen tool in Illustrator....

After I designed it, I had to save it in a way that I can then upload it in Cinema 4D, which was to save it as 'Illustrator 8'. That allowed me to upload it in Cinema 4D and after that, I opened up Cinema 4D, went to 'file', 'merge' then open Illustrator file. I had everything set up to begin using Cinema 4D.

I was taught the basic buttons in Cinema 4D and the X, Y and Z axis lines which can be seen above, those lines can be used when I want to move the shape in different directions or position across the X, Y or Z axis.

First thing I had to do was to click on 'Extrude' and place each layer of the Illustrator file into it which can be seen at the top right, I had to create a different Extrude layer for each layer of the shape. The reason was so that I could change and edit each part of the shape separately.

The next step was to edit the shape, I made it thicker so it looks 3D by going to 'object' then used 'movement' and changed the thickness of the shape which can be seen above.

The next step was to change the colour of the shape, since the shape has different layers, I can change the colour of each part instead of having just one colour. I achieved that by going to the bottom box in Cinema 4D and clicking on it and it shows a sphere, this option, I could change the colour, diffusion and even the glow of the shape. I clicked on 'colour', from there, I could change the colour of the sphere, when I was happy with the colour, I would drag the sphere to the extrude layer I wanted to change colour. The explanation can be seen below.

After that, it was time to create a floor and background to the shape. I did this by clicking on 'floor' 'tags', 'Cinema 4D Tags', 'Compositing' then clicked on 'Comp Background' and 'Comp background for HDR Maps'. and to give it colour, I just dragged a colour sphere to the floor and background layers.

The next step was to give the shape a shadow to make it look as realistic as possible, this was achieved by going to 'general', 'shadow maps (soft)' then change the 'H' to 210 then 'S' to 5% and created another light layer by going to 'coord' and changing it to 500 X, 500 Y, 500 Z and the intensity to 67%. I could choose how hard I wanted the shadow by changing the resolution of it.

It was time to make the object move, to set it up, I had to include a camera layer, simply by going to the camera option and I had to remember, when I was ready to make the object move, I had to turn the camera on by clicking on the button next to the camera layer.

Before I made the object move, I had to include text to my object, I did that by going to 'mograph', 'motext' then to edit the text, I would go to 'object' and from there, I could edit the depth, name, font etc.

To make the object move, I had to remember to turn the camera on then go to 'object', 'null object' then drag it to the camera layer. I had to make sure before I could record the object, I had to check the settings by going to the bottom box and checking that the timeline was at the start, changed the frames to 120F then went to 'coord' and turned it on by clicking on a button by 'R' which turned red, making sure it was at 0 degrees then moved the timeline to 120F and changed the degrees to 360. To make it move slower, I had to go to 'Windows', 'time (dope sheet)' then click on linear which slowed the object down when turning.

When I was happy with the end result, it was time to render the whole thing. I went to 'render options', save' then changed it so it saves as a quicktime movie then went to 'options' and changed the compression type to H.264 and then went to 'output' and changed the 'frame range' settings to 'all frames' and that was it.

Hyperreality - Why do we escape reality?

One of the things I think of when I think about hyperreality and the idea of escaping the real life is, why do we escape reality? What is it about the virtual world that makes us feel better?
